Today's Service Journal features the famed Canon 11-165mm T2.5 Super 16 cine zoom lens - a fantastically useful zoom range for the Super 16 format. The owner of this lens reached out to us about a heavy, sticky zoom movement. The zoom section on this lens is driven by a typical cam system which does require maintenance from time to time. So we quoted a partial disassembly to access the zoom section and give it a proper cleaning and adjustment.
We were able to isolate the focus section from the rest of the lens which reduces the overall labor cost and allows us to concentrate our efforts on the primary concern - the zoom section which definitely needed some attention. The grease was old and dried which was causing the zoom movement to be firm, sticky, and inconsistent - none of which is ideal for capturing quality motion picture.
Once we cleaned out all the old grease and gave the internal zoom mechanism the care it so desperately needed, re-greased the movement with high-quality factory-spec grease. We re-assembled the zoom section, mated it back with the focus section, and performed our final adjustments to ensure all of the components are aligned and calibrated for optimal performance.
