The Primoplan 58 f1.9 II revives one of the most distinctive vintage lens designs of the 20th century, reimagined for modern digital workflows. Originally developed over 80 years ago by Meyer-Optik’s Paul Schäfter, the lens is best known for its unique rendering and remarkably flexible bokeh characteristics. Wide open at f/1.9, highlights swirl and separate with a dreamlike quality, while stopping down reveals a smoother, more structured blur with gentle transitions. A 14-blade aperture maintains rounded highlights across the range, contributing to a cinematic sense of depth and separation in both still and motion applications.
Engineered with a modern optical formula by Dr. Wolf-Dieter Prenzel, the updated design preserves the lens’s historic character while optimizing performance for contemporary sensors. Premium glass elements and advanced coatings ensure consistent sharpness and contrast, while the classic five-element construction delivers subtle glow and depth throughout the frame.
